Home Front: Farm Fresh on the South Side

Now folks on the South Side of town don’t have to cross the river to find fresh, locally grown veggies. The South of the James Market, sponsored by the Market Umbrella, is launching a farmers’ market Saturday, May 3, at Forest Hill Park. Shoppers will find fresh, organic meats, eggs and produce; food items; plants and flowers; and works from local artisans and crafters. To keep little ones occupied, there are children’s activities and an area where kids can sell products they have grown or made. The market will also schedule performances from local musicians.

South of the James manager Karen Atkinson hopes the enterprise will “encourage neighborhood gardening and push sustainability and people growing their own food.” For more information, contact Atkinson at 513-3100 or the

marketumbrella@msn.com. The market continues Saturdays through October 25. At Forest Hill Park, shelter 2, at West 42nd Street and New Kent Avenue.
