Harry Smith arrived to his interview looking like a bona-fide Southern gentleman in seersucker pants and a bow tie, with the manners to match. Every question was answered by saying either, “Yes ma'am,” or “No ma'am.” At first you may think you are having a discussion with an adult; but, really you are talking with a 6'1” highly distinguished 14 year old.
Harry has been playing the cello since second grade and honestly admitted that he started with that particular instrument based on his genetic circumstances. “They offer a string ensemble at our school in second grade. They offer cello, violin, or viola, and I decided to take the cello since I was big.”
In addition to his musical talent, Harry became a page for the House of Delegates for Raleigh Ingram's district in 8th grade. After just two weeks of being on the job, he was promoted to the position of the Governor's Page in the Patrick Henry Building.
Harry is also the President of the Missionary Society at his school. In this leadership role he is responsible for the philanthropic arm of the student body. He has led his student body while volunteering at the food bank, singing carols at a retirement home, and funding an angel tree for Episcopal Relief and Development. Most recently, he has helped raise over $2,000 for Haiti relief.
When he isn't playing the cello at special volunteer events, working in the House of Delegates, or raising money for Haiti, Harry is hitting homeruns. Harry competed as Virginia's representative in the 2008 Homerun Derby and was awarded third place. “It was a great experience for me to be playing against the best hitters in the South,” Harry said. During the same season, he led his baseball team to victory in the Dixie Youth Majors World Series in La Grange, Georgia with his back to back home runs.
