A Guide to Richmond-area thrills, chills and bloody spills

Richmond loves a good scare and there’s plenty happening in the days leading up to Halloween. Whether it’s walking a ghost tour, riding a haunted hayride or running through the woods being chased by a maniac with a chain saw, people in Richmond are going to scream. Check out some of the haunted events both in and out of town.

Eerie Nights Ghost Tour
A walk through Shockoe Bottom with ghoulish guides, who tell stories of the ghosts that haunt the city. Meet on the Main Street side of the 17th Street Farmers’ Market. Thursday-Sunday evenings. $10-$13. 833-1845.

Church Hill Chillers
Haunts of Richmond presents a ghost tour of Church Hill. Meet at Patrick Henry’s Pub, 2300 E. Broad St. Every Saturday at 9 p.m. $12-$15. 343-3700.

Haunted Capitol Hill Tour
Haunts of Richmond presents a ghost tour of Capitol Hill including the haunted executive mansion and spirits in Capitol Square. Meet at the Berkeley Hotel, 1200 E. Cary St. Every Friday at 9 p.m. $12-$15. 343-3700.

Haunted Pub Crawl
Haunts of Richmond presents a ghost tour of the city’s most beloved watering holes. Meet at Honey Whyte’s Cafe, 2116 E. Main St. Third Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. $13. 343-3700.

Shadows of Shockoe Tour
Haunts of Richmond presents a ghost exploration of Shockoe Bottom, the oldest and most haunted neighborhood in Richmond. Meet at Edgar Allan Poe Museum, 1914 E. Main St. Thursdays-Saturdays at 9 p.m. $13. 343-3700.

Eerie Canal Boat Rides
Take a canal boat ride with a historic narrator telling a haunting tale of Richmond’s past as you travel down the Kanawha Canal. Meet at Canal Turning Basin at Dock and 14th streets. Oct. 31, 6 p.m.

Haunted Lantern Tours
Spend an evening at Magnolia Grange Plantation and discover its haunting history, 10020 Iron Bridge Road. Friday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m. $2-$5. 796-7121.

Creepy Hollow Hayride
Hop on the narrated Creepy Hollow Hayride for a journey through the haunted woods filled with scary surprises. 14435 Stone Horse Creek Road. Thursdays-Sundays at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20-Oct.1, Oct. 7-9, 14-15, 20-23, 27-31. $15. 346-FEAR.

Scream Forest

Haunted Evenings at Ashland Berry Farm
Take a hayride to Booger Woods and make your way through a haunted forest with ghosts and ghouls. Or head to the Haunted Carnival for some scary clowns. 12607 Old Ridge Road. Friday-Sunday nights in October at 6:30 p.m. $8-$23. 227-3601.

Blood Lake

Haunted Tuckahoe Tour

Journey Haunted Trails

Azrael’s Asylum
Azrael, the angel of death, lurks around his asylum to pull anyone toward the gates of Hell. Make your way through the maze of gruesome, real-life scenarios in which the viewer will see frightful images of poor life choices and consequences that result in death. Kings Dominion’s Halloween Haunt
This features scare zones including the CarnEvil, the Ruins, Central Stalkway, plus haunted mazes including Medieval Macabre, Slaughterhouse and Blue Ridge Bloodbath. Friday-Sunday through Oct. 30. Friday nights $36.99. Saturday and Sunday regular admission $58.99.

Busch Gardens’ Howl-O-Scream
