The Groovin' in the Garden summer concert series is changing gardens. And one of the key attractions on the schedule, a planned appearance by Jakob Dylan with Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, has been uprooted.
Groovin' was slated to happen throughout the summer at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, but the late filing of a Henrico County festival permit by the series promoter, Spotsylvania-based Haymaker Productions, will prevent May concerts from taking place there. “It's totally my fault,” Haymaker's Tom Beals says. “The county would not budge.”
Maymont has stepped in to host Groovin's four May shows — including series opener Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings' appearance May 6. But one concert that won't happen anywhere is the much-anticipated appearance of Jakob Dylan with the Three Legs (Case and Hogan) set for May 20.
This cancellation had nothing to do with the Maymont move, Beals says. “It was a huge mess-up with Neko's management,” he says. “So we scrambled and got Jay Farrar [ex-Son Volt] to appear instead [May 20].” Other artists scheduled to perform at Maymont are Keller Williams, May 13, and Carbon Leaf, May 27.
Concertgoers are advised to enter through Maymont's Hampton Street gate. Lot parking is limited but street parking is available. The Groovin' concert series is scheduled to resume at Lewis Ginter starting in June with the Patty Griffith/Buddy Miller show June 3.
