Gottwald lashes out at us.

March 7, 1995

Businessman and major nonprofit patron Bruce C. Gottwald Jr. tells local cultural organizations he’ll withhold support if they advertise in Style. In the story “Gottwald Tells Museums to Avoid Style Weekly,” it is reported: “In an interview, he characterized the paper as negative, denigrating and rumorous.” Gottwald, a board member at Ethyl Corp., had been the subject of Style’s reporting, particularly his lawsuit over the purchase of a Cary Street Road mansion. Threatened were Theater IV, the Richmond Children’s Museum, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Science Museum of Virginia Foundation Inc. They were shy about responding to requests for comment, but Style’s publisher at the time, Michael G. Abernathy, labeled the action outrageous — and for the record, the aforementioned institutions remain valued advertisers.
