Go Fun Me

Some ways to support worthy causes this holiday season while having fun.

In the spirit of choose-your-own adventures this holiday season, you can also pick from a wide variety of different ways to give back.

Sure, there are always groups looking for donations or traditional volunteers, but there are also ways to donate while having fun. Here are a few:

Byrd Theatre Foundation
Dario Argento’s genre-defining 1977 horror film, “Suspiria,” screens while the live score is played by Rome-based composer Claudio Simonetti’s legendary prog-rock act, Goblin, which was inspired by bands such as King Crimson, Yes and Genesis. The group is traveling from Italy to perform the iconic score, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Byrd Theatre. Takes place on Friday, Dec. 7, 10:30 p.m. at the Byrd Theatre, 2729 W. Cary St. Tickets cost $35. ticketfly.com.

FeedMore
The Broadberry plays hosts to “A Tribute to Aretha Franklin” featuring members of J. Roddy Walston and the Business, the Big Payback: a Tribute to James Brown, Mekong Xpress and the Get Fresh Horns and Piranha Rama, among others, paying homage to Lady Soul. Ticket proceeds and cans benefit FeedMore. The show takes place Sunday, Dec. 16, at 8 p.m. at the Broadberry, 2729 W. Broad St. Tickets cost $12 in advance, $15 at the door, plus a canned good. 12 Bars of Charity
How about knocking a few back for a cause? New to Richmond, the 12 Bars of Charity pub crawl allows participants to choose from a number of charity teams. After registering online, do-gooders get colored sweatshirts and wristbands based on the teams they choose and $10 of the fee goes to the charity. The pub crawl has no start or end point, with shuttles running a continuous loop around the 12 bars, all of which will offer drink specials for crawlers. Friday, Dec. 7, from 8 p.m. to midnight at various locations. Tickets $30. 12barsofcharity.com.

Community Bail Fund
Singer and songwriter Alex Mejias’ new album, “Kingdom Land,” was produced by Matthew E. White and features the Spacebomb house band. To celebrate its Nov. 30 release, Mejias plays a Church Hill show on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m., with guests Resound and Lowland Hum at the Robinson Theater Community Arts Center, 2903 Q St. Proceeds benefit the Community Bail Fund. Tickets cost $10, which includes a CD. Fifty dollars will get you the CD and meet and greet with the three bands. Eventbrite.com.
