Fundraiser for WRIR Founder Chris “Max” Maxwell

Activist starts webpage to aid in Maxwell’s fight against prostate cancer.

Radio personality and community activist Chris “Max” Maxwell is battling financial difficulties alongside an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Friend and fellow activist Farid Alan Schintzius has set up a donation page to help Maxwell cope with financial needs after the payment of treatments.

Maxwell is well known for founding the independent community station WRIR-FM 97.3 in 2005, when he was named to Style’s Top 40 Under 40. The low-power station marks its 11th anniversary Friday, Feb. 5, from 7 p.m. to midnight, with its annual Party for the Rest of Us benefit at the Renaissance.

Maxwell also worked on the Richmond Hostel Committee, which brought to life a dream of a low-cost lodging destination for travelers here. It opened its doors on 7 N. Second St. in September in time for the UCI Road World Championships.

Schintzius says that now it’s time for Richmond to give back to Maxwell, his friend of nearly 20 years: “For as long as I’ve known him, he’s been dreaming and scheming and crusading — not for some personal benefit but to make this city bigger, better and more interesting and more filled with diversity.”
