Far from the quaint refinement of a tearoom, and then the homespun earthiness of a local-foods cafe, the new restaurant claiming 1 N. Morris St. is a modern jolt into the next wave.

S@mple, which opens Friday, “is a first in Richmond,” says co-owner Adam Bell, “and I think it’s the perfect combination of food meets technology.”

The space has been fully redesigned with large monitors, an iPad-rental station and software-training and meeting rooms. Food is defined as international small and large plates with a Southern twist, with panini for lunch and creations such as Shanghai fried rice from the well-traveled chef Todd Butler’s repertoire. A 240-bottle wine bar adds an element that is “conducive to doing work while eating, where you can feel comfortable whipping out your computer or not,” Bell says.
