While sweeps month is over and all the other networks are in reruns, Fox TV is debuting a new series, “Titus.” It’s just what we need, too — another sitcom about a dysfunctional family.
This one is “inspired,” so they tell us, by the real life of comedian Christopher Titus. The big plus, according to Titus, is that coming from a dysfunctional family means that nothing rattles you.
On the face of it, there’s plenty to unsettle Titus. His mom is a manic-depressive schizophrenic, and his dad is a drunk who has been married five times. His mom is now in a mental hospital, dealing with her five personalities.
Stacy Keach plays the father, also known as the “anti-dad,” who specializes in killing hope and destroying self-esteem.
Cynthia Watros plays the oddball in the bunch, Titus’ girlfriend — smart, energetic and beautiful.
Titus owns a car repair shop, where he works with his younger brother Dave (Zack Ward) and his best friend Tommy (David Shatraw). Just think of the comic possibilities there.
Christopher Titus himself is the creator and executive producer of the show, which guarantees it’ll have his own stamp all over it. Given the track record of comedians in control of their own TV shows (Seinfeld aside), this may not bode well.
The show premieres on Wednesday, March 20, at 8:30 p.m.
