Fall marks the beginning of cuffing season.
If you’re in a relationship, or just unfamiliar with the term, Wikipedia defines it as “the time of year when single people actively search for short-term romantic partners to spend the colder months with, typically from October through March, culminating with Valentine’s Day.”
Usually, the first step in the process is to have a meet-and-greet. To help you get started, here are five places around the river city to jump-start your snuggle sessions.
Penny’s Wine Shop, 405 Brook Rd., Richmond
Of course, Penny’s Wine Shop checks off the initial first date requirements – food and wine – with the added benefit of a thoughtful and tasty menu and a curated wine selection. The intimate interior is reminiscent of a Brooklyn hideaway with its high ceilings and brick walls, and if you’re lucky enough to get a window table right before sunset, the golden hour lighting will provide the perfect backdrop to the inevitable food photos.
My Noodle & Bar, 1600 Monument Ave., Richmond
Walking down the steps feels like you’re descending into a hidden away spot, which is partly true, as it’s easily missed while driving by. Once inside, the low lighting and small tables immediately set the mood for lingering conversation. The Thai menu has dishes that will appeal to both conservative and adventurous palates, and there is also a sizable spirits selection, if you’re so inclined.

Hotel Greene, 508 East Franklin St., Richmond
If Wes Anderson movies strike your fancy, you’ll probably enjoy a round of mini golf at Hotel Greene. Each hole takes you through a different area of the “hotel,” including the hotel pool, a hallway reminiscent of “The Shining,” and a guest room. The lobby serves small plates along with cocktails, beer, wine, and offers brunch on weekends.
The Circuit Arcade Bar, 312 W. Leigh St., Richmond
For a more casual date where a baseball cap won’t be out of place, The Circult will fit the bill. Retro video games like “Punch Out!!” and “Mortal Kombat” are nestled beside pinball and Skee-Ball machines, and there are 50 beers on tap. Pro tip: to avoid children hopped up on sugar, go after 9 p.m., where entry is 21 and up.
Sweet Wynns, 1209 E Main St., Suite A, Richmond
It doesn’t get much more delicious than this idea. Sweet Wynns takes the typical ice cream date a step further with “create your own flavor” workshops. Once you’ve gone through the steps to make ice cream, you’ll be able to take a pint of it home – perhaps with your new friend.
