Filmmaker Sets Up Shop in Richmond

Jones’ two companies, Martin Jones Films and Day For Night LLC, are relocating from Reid’s New Millennium Studios in Petersburg to 1901 E. Franklin St. Jones decided to move after collaborating on the commercial with several members of the Superior Production Exchange, a group of 22 production and film businesses clustered in the same building on Franklin.

“It was a perfect collaboration of small businesses,” he says.

Jones does mostly advertising, and has produced commercials for Chevrolet, Daimler Chrysler, Jeep and a host of other national accounts, as well as the Virginia Lottery. For one, the Jeep Liberty, he worked with Hollywood filmmaker Rob Cohen. He’s also produced a host of feature films, incluiding Phat Beach, and directed music videos for MC Hammer.

The Grolsch commercial — the soundtrack was produced at the RainMaker sound studio in Shockoe Bottom and Richmonder Bunt Young directed the photography — features two men who come in off the street for a beer, and their surroundings and movements shift into slow motion.

“I was able to keep all of the money, literally, in Richmond,” Jones says of producing the commercial. He runs both businesses with two partners, his wife Teresa Wells Jones and producer Araia Tesfamarian. — Scott Bass
