Fiesta Café is an answer to your cravings; The Vegetarian Society of Richmond offers end-of-summer fling

Tastemakers

For those who drool over burritos and nacho chips con queso, there’s an answer to your cravings right next to VCU, and it’s called the Fiesta Café.

The scenery is spare, and you’re probably not going to want to make this your destination for a romantic evening. But the restaurant, open for four months now, makes up in abundance what it lacks in ambience.

The geniuses behind this place have discovered and remedied the serious, almost insidious shortage of Mexican buffets in this town. Thank goodness we can finally go back for second, third, and, God help us, fifth helpings of tacos and enchiladas, while taking a juke-box induced ’80s trip with Debbie Gibson’s “Electric Youth” and LL Cool J’s “Bigger and Deffer.” Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Buffet weekdays, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. 946 W. Grace St. 204-1800.

What does it mean to be a vegetarian? Well, it’s not all humus platters and curried lentils. Sometimes it means being on a road trip and watching your so-called friends scarf Whoppers while you’re stomach growls. Or trying to laugh convincingly as the umpteenth joker offers you a bite of their hamburger at a backyard barbecue.

The Vegetarian Society of Richmond is offering welcome consolation for those of you who suffered through another summer-long hotdog fever of picnics and neighborhood grill sessions. The society is hosting an end-of-summer fling Sept. 9 at Three Lakes Park in North Side, 4 p.m. Bring a (preferably vegan) dish to share.
