With SNAP benefits at risk, a guide on where to donate food, money and resources in RVA.

With the status of SNAP benefits in flux due to the government shutdown, millions of Americans are trying to figure out how they will feed themselves and their families.

Richmond restaurants, farmers markets, nonprofits and others are showing up to help their neighbors. Here are some of the places where you can do your part to help:

Philly Vegan continues its pay-what-you-can program and is taking contributions from folks who want to contribute funds to keep that offer up.

Shalom Farms

Shalom Farms is increasing its purchased food distribution by four times, offering food for free to those impacted by the shutdown, and anything that doesn’t move is going to RVA Community Fridges and local pantries.

Birdhouse Farmers Market is running a SNAP donation campaign. You can donate online; in the event that SNAP is covered by the government or another resource, contributions will be used to support the Second Baptist Church food pantry.

Ripple Ray’s in Carytown says kids eat free while SNAP benefits are shut down. The business is also accepting canned goods and non-perishable items for local food banks.

RVA Community Fridges continues to feed the community with free food 24/7. They just hosted a community fridge day on Sunday, Nov. 9 and signups are now live for their annual Thanksgiving food drive. Learn more about how you can become a daily shopper for the organization this November.

Richmond Food Not Bombs continues to host its food share every Sunday at 4 p.m. at Monroe Park. You can donate online or volunteer onsite to prep the event or cleanup after (Matchbox Mutual Aid, (2919 North Ave.).

Cooperative salon space Golden Hour Richmond is hosting a food drive throughout the month of November.

Fonticello Food Forest, a community garden located within Carter Jones/Fonticello Park in the Southside, offers a free FarmStand (2715 Bainbridge St.) Wednesdays noon-2 p.m. and volunteer opportunities Sundays 2-4 p.m. You can also donate online here.
