Fall Line Fest Announces Main Acts

Second annual local festival continues to grow, adding three new venues.

update: artist Natalie Prass had to cancel due to her tour schedule as a member of Jenny Lewis’s band.

A proto-punk band from Detroit called Death. Well-known indie rockers Real Estate from New Jersey. The Hold Steady, a reputable live rock band from Brooklyn. Richmond’s own Matthew E. White, and plenty of local hip hop.

All are headliners for this year’s second annual Fall Line Fest held Sept. 5 and 6 at various local venues. The non-profit, volunteer-run local festival announced more than half of its lineup today.

“We’re taking big steps in 2014,” says one of the festival’s organizers Stephen Lecky, noting the event has added three major venues including the National, the newly opened Broadberry near the Boulevard and Broad, and the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre. “I think we’re doing a good job of continuing to rep national and local acts — we have a lot more local this year.”

Once again, the festival will compete with two other major festivals that weekend, Nelson County’s Lockn, which is more of a jamband affair, and Hopscotch in Raleigh, NC.

“It’s kind of on purpose for Hopscotch, when we started we wanted to be able to route some of the same bands. Though we want to have a different festival,” Lecky explains. “That’s the first Friday of VCU students being back in school, folks have settled down. First Friday in Sept is perfect time to have a festival like this.”

Lecky says the festival will have a trolley from Segway of Richmond running back and forth. It will also have the Pedal Power folks operating rickshaws. Main beer sponsors will include locals Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and Star Hill Brewery from Charlottesville. Other primary sponsors include Pearson Mazda, Blanchard’s Coffee Co., and Hype Richmond.

Lecky says that there will probably be around 20 more acts to be announced, for a grand total of around 55 acts. Ticket prices for the weekend just went up to $30 for a weekend pass, though that will rise again to $40 the weekend of the event. “I think it’s an incredible deal,” Lecky says, “some of the headliners alone can command that price.”

Other local venues involved include Strange Matter, Gallery 5, and The Camel. A full list of the announced acts is below and there will be future announcements regarding restaurants and arts galleries involved, Lecky says.

There will be a happy hour held at Broadberry on May 22 to celebrate this non-profit local music festival that Lecky hopes will continue to grow each year.
