Shepherd’s Center Open University Winter Session

The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond, now in its 40th year, offers lifelong learning opportunities for older adults through its Open University (OU). The 8-week winter session of OU courses and lunch talks begins the week of January 15 at 3 locations around the area. Some classes are also available via Zoom.
Monday classes are held at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 7757 Chippenham Pkwy. Course topics include architecture, 1940’s jazz, critical thinking, current events, the Normandy invasion, Spanish, Italian and good English.
On Thursdays, the classes meet at Lakeside United Methodist Church , 2333 Hilliard Road. Winter topics include Irish short stories, great women composers, presidential leadership, meaning in art, memoir writing, introduction to gardening, chair exercises, church history, decision making in the Civil War, and traveling in Japan. The courses on both days are from 9:30 to 10:30 and from 11:00 to noon and are followed at 12:30 by lunch talks on a variety of topics.
Additional offerings in foreign languages are available on Tuesdays via Zoom.
The Wednesday Lunch and Life series is a cooperative arrangement between St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Road, and The Shepherd’s Center. Bag lunch is from 12:00 to 12:30 with the church providing beverages and dessert. Lunch speakers are scheduled by The Shepherd’s Center from 12:30 to 1:30 from Jan. 17 through Feb. 7. This program is free and open to the public.
