Helene Ruiz founder of “The Urban Individualists” is excited to announce her curation of “It’s Just Exquisite!” and “Resurrecting the Exquisite Corpse,” both opening Friday, October 4th, 2024, during the First Fridays Artwalk.
These exhibitions will be hosted at the Richmond Public Library (101 E Franklin St, Richmond, VA 23219) and anne’s Visual Art Studio gallery (208 W Broad St, Richmond, Va 23220).
Inspired by the Surrealist Exquisite Corpse technique, these exhibits feature collaborative artworks from diverse artists, each contributing a unique section without seeing the others’ contributions. The result is a collection of unpredictable and captivating pieces.
Artists include: Helene Ruiz, Josue Fred, Orisegun Olomidun, Anne Hart Chay, Dorothy Rice, Robert Billings, Liz Stafford, Tahanie Medina, Tanisha Medina, Benjamin Havens, Siddartha Pierce, Richard Harding, Robin Cyrtmus and Naomi Cordova.
“It’s Just Exquisite”! and “Resurrecting the Exquisite Corpse” are not just exhibitions; they are celebrations of creativity, experimentation, and community,” says Helene Ruiz, the organizer behind the shows. “We wanted to create an environment where artists could come together, push the boundaries of their artistic practice, and create something truly unique.”
Be sure to visit both shows to get the full benefit of all the works being displayed at each location within walking distance of one another. Feel free to share, invite and bring a friend. These are Free and Open to the Public events!
“We’re not just creating art; we’re creating an experience,” says the organizer, Helene Ruiz. “Through “It’s Just Exquisite!” and “Resurrecting the Exquisite Corpse,” we hope to inspire others to embrace collaboration, take risks, and push the boundaries of their own creativity.”

MoMA describes Exquisite Corpse as a game in which each participant takes turns writing or drawing on a sheet of paper, folding it to conceal his or her contribution, and then passing it to the next player for further contribution. The game gained popularity in artistic circles during the 1920s when it was adopted as a technique by artists of the Surrealist movement to generate collaborative compositions.
AIGA Tampa Bay describes Exquisite Corpse as a vintage drawing game that was played by surrealists such as Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray in the 1920s. Based on an old parlor game called Consequences that broke a story down into a set structure, Exquisite Corpse breaks down a drawing of a body into three sections: a head, torso, and legs. By keeping each section a surprise from the next person, the combinations become spontaneous and outrageous.
“The Approach” will perform in our small lot beside the gallery for the Opening Reception of “Resurrecting the Exquisite Corpse”
First Friday Artober 4, 2024 from 6-9PM.
