Join us for a screening of Talking Leaves (2022). Commissioned for the Singapore Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale, Talking Leaves is the first feature film from award-winning artist, writer and filmmaker Shubigi Rao. Talking Leaves is both a prescient and timely artistic documentary. Filmed solo across 5 years, it spans multiple sites across the world to form a polyvocal, mythopoetic film about the censorship of books, destruction of libraries, assaults on knowledge and free press, and the loss of languages in embattled communities. Like leaves of an enduring tree, the voices of multiple people and their actions demonstrates the persistent value and power of books, archives, shadow and pirate libraries as vehicles of resistance. The film is part of Rao’s ongoing project, Pulp: A Short Biography of the Banished Book.
