Join us on Thursday, September 5th at 4:30 PM! Enjoy free refreshments and learn about exciting titles for elementary and middle grade readers all in honor of Hispanic Heritage (Sept 15 – Oct 15) as Book People welcomes Special Guests Meg Medina, Sara Hudson, and Angela Dominguez.
Meg Medina is the current National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, the first Latina named to that position by the Library of Congress. She is the author of many works for children of all ages, including the Newbery-winning book Merci Suárez Changes Gears, which was followed by two more acclaimed books in the Suárez family series: Merci Suárez Can’t Dance and Merci Suárez Plays It Cool. Her young adult novels, nonfiction chapter books, and picture books include several beloved and prize-winning titles. Her latest picture book is No More Señora Mimí, a Junior Library Guild selection. The daughter of Cuban immigrants, she grew up in Queens, New York, and now lives in Richmond, Virginia.
Sara Hudson is Programs Manager for Read to Them, a national nonprofit organization that promotes reading in schools and families, reaching 500,000 students each year with One School, One Book programs. Sara is a longtime resident of the West End and so thrilled to have Book People in the neighborhood. After a career as a preschool teacher, Sara now works at a family literacy nonprofit helping to get quality books into the hands of children here in Richmond and across the country. You might have seen her book love in the shop – she writes the shelf copy for the middle grade section.
Angela Dominguez was born in Mexico City and grew up in North Texas. She now resides on the east coast with her boyfriend, Kyle, and their petite dog, Petunia. She is also the author and illustrator of several books for children including the beloved Stella Díaz series. She is a New York Times Bestseller, Sid Fleischman winner, and a two-time Pura Belpré Illustration Honoree. Her books have garnered acclaim from the New York Public Library, Chicago Public Library, Best Picks from Amazon, and several State reading lists.
Her upcoming books include the third Lolo & Birdie book, I Want More! ¡Quiero más!, and Gabby Torres Gets a Billion Followers. Gabby is Angela’s debut into the world of comics and mischief. Angela is a proud member of SCBWI, PEN America, and represented by Wernick and Pratt Literary Agency. As a child, she loved reading books and making a mess creating pictures. She’s delighted to still be doing both.
