East End Elegy

April 10 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Ticketholders can join us for a pre-show talk with Brian Palmer at 6:30 PM in the North Court Choir Room

East End Elegy is a love letter in song by University of Richmond Artist-in-Residence Leyla McCalla. The project is dedicated to the cemetery stewards and grassroots community organizers at Friends of East End as well as the dearly departed African-American families buried there. Commissioned by the University of Richmond, these songs speak to the perennial neglect of African-American burial grounds in Richmond, revealing the status quo of systemic inequality which has fueled the desecration of these sacred spaces. The performance will have a pre-talk with photojournalist and co-founder of Friends of East End, Brian Palmer.

This concert is offered as part of the Department of Music Free Concert Series 2024-2025 Season. The Department of Music produces over 25 concerts annually featuring a broad range of styles and genres. Enjoy student recitals, faculty ensemble performances, and concerts created in collaboration with visiting artists. All concerts are FREE and seating is general admission. Tickets are required, and all will be welcomed as space allows.
