Contrary to popular narrative, Appalachia and its history are rife with stories of resistance – against capitalism, prejudice, exploitation, and imperialism. Guided by Megan, a native of Appalachia, we will explore a range of narratives from the origin of the term “redneck” (originally related to union organizing), to the tree-sitters that resisted the Mountain-Valley Pipeline, to coal mine wars. We will also examine radical media and culture projects rooted in Appalachia, the role that socialism and anarchism played in Appalachian resistance, and how the cultural practices of Appalachia can be reimagined to inspire us to build community in our own neighborhoods.
