Event Pick: Young Scum, Echo Courts and Collin Thibodeauxx at Gallery5

March 5

Here are some things you never hear people say: 1. Mayor Jones and his administration have been great for the city, 2. The James River will be only better by having treated wastewater from Dominion Power’s coal ash pits dumped in it, and 3. This band sounds like the Smiths. Only No. 3, referring to the legendary British band, is possible within city limits. Young Scum does sound amazingly like the Smiths. The Capital City quartet draws heavily from the young melodic Morrissey and company for its peppy brand of indie-pop rock. The songs “Do You Remember” and “Back in the City,” from the group’s 2015 split release with England’s Reporters, are seriously catchy “Queen is Dead”-era jingle jangles. Young Scum shines the light that never goes out Saturday, March 5, at Gallery5. Joining it will be Echo Courts from North Carolina and Richmond’s Collin Thibodeauxx. Doors open at 8 p.m. $5-$8.
