With spring in the air, you can count on two things in Richmond: the onslaught of allergy-related impairments and the beginning of Friday Cheers. The annual concert series on Brown’s Island kicks off its 31st season Friday, May 1, with performances by Shakey Graves and Yarn. The Austin, Texas, troubadour Shakey Graves, hailing from the land of cross-cultural pollinations, offers lo-fi county blues brimming with festive intent. His 2014 release “And the War Came” is a swamp-based assessment of acoustic pursuits that works as a party enhancer just as well as it does for solitary listening. The front-porch Americana of Brooklyn, New York’s Yarn works much the same way, with flesh-and-bone, sing-a-long melodies predicated on human interaction. Doors to the island open at 6 p.m. Admission is $5. Call 788-6466 or visit venturerichmond.com.
