Event Pick: White Laces Record Premiere Show with Magnus Lush, Camp Howard and Gemtone at Strange Matter

May 26

White Laces are evolving. Though born from the daydream nation of Sonic Youth, the local experimental pop-rock band isn’t content reliving past teenage riots. “No Floor,” the group’s new full-length on Egghunt Records, is a hook-filled expanse of ’80s new wave pop, Brian Eno-inspired keyboard textures and uplifting Radiohead-isms. But what’s most striking about the album are the vocals. From the atmospheric rises of “Dots” to the Joy Division throbs of “LOTM,” guitarist and lead vocalist Landis Wine commands attention without hogging the spotlight. Easily the group’s most realized and engaging release to date, the White Laces celebrate the impending release of their infinitely listenable new album on Thursday, May 26, at Strange Matter. Joining them will the be the post-punk ambience of Magnus Lush, Camp Howard’s indie-jangle pop and the dark, keyboard confessions of Gemtone. Doors open at 8 p.m. $5. strangematterrva.com.
