Event Pick: Useless Eaters, Christi and Naked Baby at Strange Matter

May 16

I think I could listen to the Useless Eaters every day. Originally from Tennessee, the San Francisco-based garage rockers make a glorious racket. The group’s new five-track, 10-inch EP, “Temporary Mutilation,” combines the clipped sonic cynicism of the Fall with the pushing-too-hard simplicity of the Seeds, creating a brand of pre- and post-hardcore punk that’s free of needless emo additives. Severely danceable tunes such as the glockenspiel-spiked title tack and the totally wired rant of “Car Accident Face” pogo through the past and present to repeated listens. As of this writing, it’s been 10 days since I first heard the group and I keep going back for more. The Useless Eaters dole out the rock Monday, May 16, at Strange Matter. Joining them will be Richmond bar chord wonders Christi and the fuzzed-out, sing-a-long tantrums of Naked Baby. Doors open at 9 p.m. $7. strangematterrva.com.
