Running an alternative performance venue is difficult. The hours are long, the work often is thankless and the profit margins are razor-thin. You either have to be crazy, truly committed or both to even think about starting one. Gallery5, the craziest, most committed culture pusher in the city is holding a 12-hour fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 17, to make improvements to its ongoing labor of love. The artistic marathon will feature music from local tunesmiths, including a reunion performance by New Turks, Peace Beast, Prayer Group, Camp Howard and the Smirks. Along with the sounds, there will be art, beer and food, and a raffle with prizes from kindred spirits Steady Sounds, Brick City Spa, Saison Market, the Byrd Theatre and the Science Museum of Virginia. The festivities commence at noon. Suggested admission is $10, but feel free to give more if you can. gallery5arts.org.
