You can’t have a discussion about Richmond music without mentioning Tim Barry. The Northern Virginia refugee isn’t your typical carpetbagger. Since relocating to Richmond in 1990 with his influential hardcore group Avail, the vocalist and beating heart of the band helped solidify the city’s standing as one of the country’s premiere hubs of underground music-making. The group hasn’t performed live since 2007, but Barry has never stopped touring or making music. The acoustic Americana he’s made since leaving the band embodies the traditions of both punk and folk without being beholden to them. Most people in his position would take the easy way out and cash in on their history playing golden oldies. Not Barry — he plays only the music he wants to make. As much as his constantly evolving music continues to inspire a worldwide generation of musicians, so do his do-it-yourself insistence on following his muse and his tireless work ethic.
