Event Pick: The Suffers at the Beacon Theatre

Sunday, June 21

Other than the bitterest of curmudgeons, it’s difficult to imagine anybody suffering through the music of the Suffers. The 10-piece soul band from Houston is the definition of user-friendly, playing a brand of ’60s soul, funk and R&B that’s as likeable as consensual sex or free money. More modern than kindred spirits Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, the Suffers’ take on post-James Brown booty shaking is built on initiating audience participation. The group’s debut four-song EP, “Make Some Room,” is an open call to get everyone onto the dance floor. Tunes such as the simmering burn of “Stay” and the Al Green-inspired lament, “Giver,” complement the fevered grooves of “Gwan” and the soulful strut of the EP’s title track with a funk-based appreciation for all stages of seduction. Passionate, sweaty fun for all generations, the Suffers kick out the jams Sunday, June 21, at the Beacon Theatre in Hopewell. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is $10-$40. thebeacontheatreva.com. ***THIS SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELED***
