Event Pick: The Southern Belles and the Slank at the Camel

July 1

The frolicking, Beatle-esque rock championed by the Southern Belles continues the story of Buffalo Bill. Like the Fab Four, the longtime Richmond group’s sing-a-long synthesis of different musical genres and eras is easy on the ear.

On its 2015 full-length release, “Close to Sunrise,” the funky organ strut of “Wreck” and the ’70s blaxploitation soundtrack grooves of “Soul Shaker” invoke the freewheeling days of early FM radio. The tunes are tightly constructed but are designed for in-the-moment interpretation. It’s this loose-but-tight compositional style that gives the group its rootsy, jam-based appeal.

On Friday, July 1, the Southern Belles play their always-packed First Friday monthly gig at the Camel. Opening will be hometown kindred spirits the Slank. Doors open for groove-centric proceedings at 9 p.m. $10-$12. thecamel.org.
