Event Pick: “The Russian Woodpecker” Screening at the Byrd Theater

Jan. 30

For those still fascinated by the tragedy of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, don’t miss a special screening of an acclaimed new documentary, “The Russian Woodpecker,” which tells the story of Fedor Alexandrovich’s research into the cause of the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine. The film, which won the World Cinema Documentary grand jury prize at that festival last year, has stirred plenty of controversy. Lucky for us, the screening also will feature director Chad Garcia, a friend of local artist Noah Scalin — who also will be signing his own “Skull-a-Day” book — as well as the University of Richmond’s Russian and international studies chairwoman, Yvonne Howell. She’ll be signing copies of the new collection she edited, “Red Star Tales: a Century of Russian and Soviet Science Fiction” (more Platonov readers in this country, please!). It’s an intriguing bounty of riches for anyone interested in contemporary Russia. The screening takes place Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. at the Byrd Theater. Tickets are $5.
