Known for creating music loosely based on the popular video game series Mega Man, the Protomen are musical Reaganomics. The secretive, nine-piece group of Middle Tennessee State University recording graduates takes its joystick, pop-culture obsessions from the 1980s sounds of Sigue Sigue Sputnik and the duty-for-now-futures brilliance of Devo, while referring to its work as storytelling. The collective vision instilled in its rock opera narratives of good versus evil is one of mechanized, dance-floor-ready distance. Subversively grandiose, the Protomen take the gratuitous excesses of Styx, Queen and Rush to create a Church of the Subgenius appraisal of the past, present and future. In other words, it’s a show you don’t want to miss. The Protomen bring their video-gamed take on Broadway rock to the Broadberry on Monday, July 13. Richmond post-hardcore metal group Simple Obsession open. Doors open for the all ages show at 6 p.m. Admission is $13-$15. thebroadberry.com.
