Event Pick: The Obsessed, Karma to Burn, the Atomic Bitchwax and the Medusa at Strange Matter

May 18

The Obsessed was ahead of its time. Formed in the late ’70s by vocalist Scott “Wino” Weinrich, the influential Rockville, Maryland, band made a gooey brand of heavy metal long before that type of molasses-based riffage was even remotely in vogue. It was and remains a polarizing sound that either clears a room or unites it in head-banging unison. After numerous stops and starts through the ensuing decades, the originators of doom metal have reunited to reclaim their rightful place as the undisputed kings of the creepy crawl. On Wednesday, May 18, Weinrich — backed-up by bassist Dave Sherman and drummer Brian Costantino — resurrects the group’s distinctive tonal dissonance for a show at Strange Matter. Joining them will be Karma to Burn from West Virginia, New Jersey stoners the Atomic Bitchwax and Richmond metal machine the Medusa. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $20. strangematterrva.com.
