Event Pick: The Latin Jazz and Salsa Festival at Dogwood Dell

Aug. 20

With the Richmond Jazz Festival in the rearview mirror, you can continue to get your polyrhythmic kicks within city limits at the ninth annual Latin Jazz and Salsa Festival. Sweet Luis Hidalgo, host of the longtime WCLM-AM 1450 AM music program, “The Latin Jazz and Salsa Show” (Fridays, 6-10 p.m.), has assembled yet another diverse lineup of regional and international dance-floor champions that will take the outdoor stage at the Dogwood Dell Amphitheater on Saturday, Aug. 20. Headlining are revered New Jersey-born crooner Luisito Rosario, world-class entertainer Melina “La Muñeca de La Salsa” Almodovar from Puerto Rico and sultry nomadic songstress Isis la Enfermera de la Salsa. Rounding out the day of sweat-producing propulsions will be Allen Hidalgo from New York, Fredericksburg’s Orquesta Curaré and 804 Dominican Republic transplant Frankely Fernandez, with Zabor Dance and DJ Eddy Mayorga keeping the action going between the sets. The free, family-friendly festivities run 3-8 p.m. Call 646-1437 or visit thelatinjazzshow.net.
