Living in Richmond makes you a tomato snob. I’ve eaten tomatoes all over the world and consumed not a single one beyond our region that can compare. That’s not a boast — it’s a simple declaration of fact. If you don’t believe me, find proof at the Hanover Tomato Festival, taking place Saturday, July 9, at Pole Green Community Center in Mechanicsville. I dare anyone to eat one of the juicy, cross-botanical berries on sale and tell me they aren’t the best tomatoes they’ve ever eaten. Culinary declarations aside, the showcase of this region’s tastiest crop will feature more than 200 vendors, a petting zoo, children’s activities and entertainment to make the case that we’re pretty good at throwing festivals too. The tomato-based, outdoor party runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with free admission. Call 365-6000 or visit hanovercounty.gov.
