Event Pick: The Chris Vasi Quartet at VMFA

Aug. 25

I’m getting sick of guitars. For music to evolve, I believe people must make music without them. That said, who doesn’t love the sound of one? One of the reasons the six-string will never go out of style is how the instrument sounds in the hands of Chris Vasi. Well-versed in a multitude of styles and expressions, the Richmond guitarist has the one thing that most guitarists don’t — the element of surprise. I’ve heard him pick like Chet Adkins, chord like Wes Montgomery and elephant talk like Adrian Belew. No matter the genre, he’s always worth hearing. On Thursday, Aug. 25, Vasi is joined by saxophonist John Lilley, bassist Carter Blough and drummer Scott Clark for a performance touching on the many eras of jazz at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The show runs from 6-9 p.m. Free.
