Event Pick: The 2nd Street Festival in Jackson Ward

Oct. 1 and 2

Are you kidding me? Washington go-go legends Rare Essence are playing free this weekend? The 2nd Street Festival, the annual celebration of the past, present and future of Jackson Ward, takes place Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2, in the historic Richmond neighborhood. Rare Essence and guest DJ Kool headline the musical festivities Saturday. And during the course of the event, four outdoor stages will be graced by homegrown sensations James “Saxsmo” Gates, Mighty Joshua, Butcher Brown, Victor Haskin’s Skein, Ban Caribe and others. Along with melodies, there will be vendors, cultural showcases, speakers and children’s activities to showcase the enduring legacy of one of the most historically significant neighborhoods in black America. Presented by Venture Richmond, Altria and Dominion Resources, the cultural celebration is Saturday, noon-7, and Sunday, noon-6. Free. venturerichmond.com.
