Richmond loves its murals. But how often do you get a chance to watch them being created in a festive atmosphere? This three-day celebration at the Diamond, Friday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 24, gives you that chance as our minor league baseball stadium is transformed into a bright canvas of mixed-media art, including murals, projection lighting, landscape art, stairwell art – even drone art.

“The Diamond might not be there forever, but that’s the beauty of street art is that it’s transient,” says Katie Benson, the vice president of the RVA Street Art Festival. “We’re creating a place for people to share stories and help a dialogue happen.”

This festival, spearheaded by longtime local muralist Ed Trask and urban planner Jon Baliles, is different from others because the group’s mission is to develop local artists. The festival organizers do this by allowing the locals to collaborate with international artists. For instance, Zeh Palito from Brazil will be teaming with Richmond’s Andre Shank to paint the highly visible crown at the venue. And it’s not just art. Since the festival is working with the Flying Squirrels, there will be a concert series, food, beer trucks, celebrity appearances and plenty of activities for kids.

Also, the festival is raising money for Connor’s Heroes this year, a group that uses art as a medium to help kids with cancer. So get out, get into it and watch this beloved spot on Boulevard blossom with art. Free. Estimated start time is 4 p.m. on Sept. 22. rvastreetart.com.
