Event Pick: Sharon Jones and Trombone Shorty at Innsbrook After Hours

May 25

Yaaassss, May just got a lot funkier. While Innsbrook After Hours is known for booking hot new country acts and rock oldies, it’s been branching out. We’re hoping this show, featuring a Daptone funk queen with a rising New Orleans jazz legend, is a sign of more soulful pairings to come. No stranger to Richmond love, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are Grammy-nominated live music studs who always bring it. I first met Jones a decade ago after an amazing Alley Katz gig while she was wandering the empty, post-show floor looking for her rings — which had flown off her sweaty hands during an incredible, James Brown-like performance (she hails from near Brown’s hometown of Augusta, Georgia). A former corrections officer, Jones has been battling cancer in recent years, but it hasn’t stopped her from delighting fans with her high-energy, soul-revue-style shows. Opening is Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue. A sought-after multi-instrumentalist, Shorty is known mostly for his trombone and trumpet-playing, which has been in demand from Monday Night Football to the White House. Should be a sizzling show that primes the pump for summer — plus, there’s an unannounced guest. It all goes down Wednesday, May 25, with gates at 5 p.m. Tickets run $25 to $30. innsbrookafterhours.com.
