One of the first things that comes to people’s minds when they think of Richmond is that it’s the former capital of the Confederacy. What most outsiders don’t know is that the city always has been a hotbed of creative activity. A telling example of the artistic impulses that define us is RVA Maker Fest on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Science Museum of Virginia. The annual home- and hand-made showcase features interactive demonstrations of science, art, technology, engineering, sustainability, crafts and fashion by more than 100 regional innovators, artists, hobbyists and creators. Also, fermented offerings and culinary considerations will be offered by area breweries and food trucks. The indoor-and-outdoor exhibition of indigenous inspirations takes place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free. rvamakerfest.com.
