Event Pick: Rozwell Kid, Sea of Storms and Young Scum at Gallery5

Monday, June 20

Rozwell Kid proves that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The quartet of West Virginia pop punkers sound so much like Weezer on their new EP release, “Good Graphics,” that I thought I was listening to Rivers Cuomo demo tracks from the ’90s. Originality may not be the group’s strong suit, but it does a stellar job of re-creating the sing-a-long, pop ’n’ roll of their idols. The user-friendly rise and falls of “Magic Eye,” “Angus Soundtrack Deep Cut” and the severely catchy opening track, “Baby’s First Sideburns,” stand as first-rate, post-grunge rock releases. Rozwell Kid has yet to take the marble from Como’s crowd-pleasing hand, but it proves that it can be successfully shared. The group looks like Buddy Holly to your Mary Tyler Moores on Monday, June 20, at Gallery5. Joining it will be Richmond rockers Sea of Storms and Young Scum. Doors open at 7 p.m. $10. gallery5arts.org.
