Event Pick: Nik Turner’s Hawkwind, Clang Quartet, Hedersleben and Slump at Strange Matter

Nov. 17

Hawkwind is best known as the pioneering space rock band from the United Kingdom that spawned the late, great Lemmy Kilmeister before he formed Motorhead. (How effed-up do you have to be to get kicked out of a space rock band?) But the original voice of this pre-eminent weirdo group was Nik Turner, a 76-year-old English musician who plays sax, flute and sings. He’s kept the spirit going in such groups as Inner City Unit and Space Ritual, but has returned to using the Hawkwind name. The Chicago Tribune describes him as “cheerfully insane,” and you can bet he’ll be performing such beloved classics as “Silver Machine,” perhaps with a little less vitality in those lungs. Also on the eclectic bill is the improvisational percussion and performance art noise of Clang Quartet, the German space rock of Hedersleben, and Richmond’s own space-punks, Slump. This show calls all weirdoes to ride Nov. 17 at Strange Matter. Doors are at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 day of show.
