No band sounds like Mutwawa. That’s mainly because the Richmond duo, consisting of sound manipulators Gary Stevens and Jason Hodges, forsakes traditional instrumentation to create openly aggressive, analog-based expanses. Its latest self-titled offering, released on the cassette-oriented label, Ormolycka, continues the thoroughly engrossing scientific experimentation. From the subdued, minimalist seething of “Do You Wanna Hurt” to the Orwell-meets-Kraftwerk agitation, “Burn Down the City,” Mutwawa’s industrialized dance floors are imbued with a fiendish sense of purpose. It’s a slithering idiosyncratic sound that I can’t seem to get enough of. One of the most interesting groups this city has ever produced, Mutwawa unleashes its hounds of sounds on Sunday, March 20, at Bandito’s Burrito Lounge.
