The inaugural show for a new free summer concert series in the lovely Valentine museum garden offers an intriguing contrast in styles. (And full disclosure: The series is booked by Style’s calendar editor, Chris Bopst.) First you have Fredericksburg’s Harry Wilson, vibraphonist extraordinaire, whose claim to fame is recording with experimental jazz great Sun Ra during the late 1970s. Nowadays he and his talented quartet improvise through jazz standards from the likes of Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver and Charlie Parker. Hearing the interplay between Wilson and pianist Steve Rabson will be quite the treat for the uninitiated. Also on the bill is celebrated local musician Gull, aka Nathaniel Rappole, a worldly street and touring musician with the incredible ability to sing and play electric guitar at the same time. Oh yeah, and the drums — that’s the hard part: singing, playing drums and playing guitar at the same time. Richmond’s greatest one-man band always delivers a unique and revelatory performance. It all goes down on Thursday, June 2, from 6-8 p.m. in the Valentine garden.
