Event Pick: Ms. Lauryn Hill at the National

May 10

Lauryn Hill has a voice of rare beauty. Her raspy alto, a combination of Nina Simone’s emotional directness and the soulful immediacy of Etta James, conveys pleasure and pain with striking conviction. The reclusive former member of the Fugees has drifted in and out of the spotlight since the release her massively successful debut solo album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” in 1998. Hill’s contributions to the 2015 compilation, “Nina Revisited: a Tribute to Nina Simone,” showcase the depth of her range in making Simone classics such as “Wild Is the Wind,” “Feeling Good” and “Ne Me Quitte Pas” distinctly hers. Lauryn Hill comes to town for a performance at the National on Tuesday, May 10. Doors open for the all-ages show at 8 p.m. Admission is $63-$68.
