Event Pick: Marian McLaughlin Trio and Wester Green at Black Iris

Aug. 21

I have a ton of music. Part of the reason why I have so much of it is because some music is best heard during certain times of the day. Listening to the Marian McLaughlin Trio’s 2015 release, “Spirit House,” as I am on a rainy summer afternoon is the perfect time to experience the band’s spacious orchestral folk. It has a sense of midday introspection, a vaguely melancholic affirmation of the possibilities of impending night, in the measured closeness of its atmospheric violins, cellos and guitars. From the stately, stringed hues of “Ocean” to the whimsical rises and falls of “Calm Canary of the Arctic Sea,” vocalist McLaughlin colors and centers each chamber-rooted foray with knowing stokes and gradations. The group unveils its wuthering heights in the appropriately intimate confines of Black Iris on Sunday, Aug. 21. Richmond songwriter and guitarist Wester Green opens. 8 p.m. $10. 321westbroad.com.
