Event Pick: LVL UP, Palm and Big Baby at Gallery5

Sept. 9

Catchy is an adjective you read a lot in music reviews. It’s an easy term to use, but rarely does it apply. In the case of LVL UP, catchy is an accurate, one-word-description of the group’s instantly appealing and memorable lo-fi pop. Given the saturation of alternative rock, LVL UP’s deft adroitness in constructing hook-laden tunes is even more impressive in the crowded field of indie ear worming. On the group’s third album, “Return to Love” on Sub Pop Records, bouncy fuzzes of “Hidden Driver,” “Pain” and “She Sustain Us” lure you in on first listen. Then you’ll want to hear them again. In the vein of Neutral Milk Hotel and Mount Eerie, the Brooklyn-based pop peddlers play Friday, Sept. 9, at Gallery5. Palm from Philadelphia and my favorite new Richmond pop band, Big Baby, open. 9 p.m. $10-$12. gallery5arts.org.
