A shrewdly calculating trailblazer until the end, David Bowie turned his death into an unprecedented multimedia wake. While legions of fans worldwide, me included, continue to mourn his passing, the pop culture chameleon saved his best trick for last — and one of his best albums in years. In the words of Johnny Rotten on his first post-Sex Pistols single, “Public Image,” his grand finale was his goodbye. The public outpouring of affection for the Thin White Duke continues Friday, Feb. 5, when local Major Tom devotees Life on Mars play the Broadberry. Better yet: The homage covering all eras of Bowie’s career will raise money for Virginia Commonwealth University’s Massey Cancer Center. There will also be a costume contest and raffle. Doors open at 8 p.m. $8-$10. thebroadberry.com.
