Here’s a great bill for fans of dark wave: King Woman is the alter-ego of San Francisco’s Kristina Esfandiari, who’s dabbled in folk, metal and shoe gaze — a strong pairing with Richmond’s Dorthia Cottrell, known as the lead singer for the nationally respected Richmond doom metal outfit, Windhand. Cottrell has been making waves with her own dusty, forlorn folk since the release of her self-titled debut last year, which includes a lovely Gram Parsons cover (“A Song for You”). Also from San Francisco is Wax Idols, who should not be missed. The band is fronted by a professional dominatrix, Hether Fortune, who makes icy-cool, ’80s-styled post-punk that will surprise you with its underlying melodic hooks. Both King Woman and Wax Idols recently bailed on a tour with Pentegram citing harassment and “an overload of bullshit.” They’ll be ready to do their thing June 9 at Strange Matter.
