Event Pick: Kevin Gates, Solo Lucci and OG Boobie Black at the National

Thursday, July 30

Kevin Gates wants to lay his truth on you. Defined by chest-thumbing bravado, the party-enabling skills expressed by the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, rapper are fairly common. But what sets Gates apart from the hip-hop pack is his often humorous, club-banging take on thug life. His low-slung proclamations don’t primp and preen for attention, but rather demand it. His 2014 release, “Luca Brasi 2: Gangsta Grillz,” is a hardcore, family-unfriendly exploration of street, sex and socialization. With a litany of co-conspirators including Rich Homie Quan, K. Camp, August Alsina and Rico Love, Gates’ raspy baritone boom should make all the booty in the house bounce. Kevin Gates rocks the new millennium bells Thursday, July 30, at the National. Solo Lucci and OG Boobie Black open. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $25-$30. thenationalva.com. — Chris Bopst
