Event Pick: Irma Thomas at University of Richmond

Nov. 11

The heart and soul queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas, has been delivering soul music since 1960, and her contralto voice and legit Big Easy phrasing still sounds instantly recognizable. Like Dylan, she’s 76 years old and still takes home awards, winning the Grammy for contemporary blues album in 2007. She may be known best for her old school cover of “Time Is on My Side,” later recorded by the Rolling Stones, but her repertoire is much deeper. In Richmond, she’ll be joined by New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Legacy Quintet as well as the Grammy-winning spiritualists, Blind Boys of Alabama, who both would be worth the price of admission alone. The show takes place Saturday, Nov. 11, at Camp Concert Hall at the University of Richmond. 7:30 p.m. $10-$60. modlin.richmond.edu.
