I don’t think people realize what a big deal having the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond is going to be. In size and scope, the only other event that compares is the Civil War. And like the continuing battle of Southern regression, the international event, held only for the second time in the United States, is going to change the city. To help you prepare for the historic event, the Valentine presents its new exhibition, “In Gear: Richmond Cycles.” The bicycle-themed history lesson showcases the centuries-old legacy and continuing influence of two-wheel travel in the former Capital of the Confederacy. Curated by David Voelkel, the exhibit opens Thursday, Aug. 27, with a members-only reception from 6-8 p.m. It also features an up-close look at the new chrome-plated bike helmet being sold for charity by I Am RVA. The general public can catch its first view of the timely exhibition on Friday, Aug 28, starting at 10 a.m. Runs through Jan. 3. 649-0711. thevalentine.org.
